Pontypool Canal

May is National Walking Month - the perfect time to get out, get active, and explore more of the beautiful countryside. If you’re a motorhome owner, you already know the joy of life on the road - but have you ever found the perfect walk, only to realise there’s nowhere suitable to park your motorhome?

That’s where a Towacar comes in. Towing a compact, capable car behind your motorhome opens up a world of walking routes that you’d probably struggle to reach otherwise. Narrow lanes, small village car parks, remote trailheads - no problem. With a Towacar, your motorhome becomes your basecamp, and your car gives you the freedom to roam.

When you pick up your new Towacar from our garage in Pontypool, you’re perfectly placed to explore some of South Wales’ best walking routes - and we’ll even treat you to a free night’s stay at the nearby Port Kemys Caravan & Camping Park, so you can kick off your walking adventures right away.

Here are some fantastic walking routes – all within about an hour of our base at Station Road, Griffithstown – that are even easier to explore with a Towacar.

Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal

A classic Welsh canal towpath accessible in less than a minute from our garage. The Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal is a scenic, mostly flat trail that’s perfect for a stroll or bike ride. In fact, this 35-mile canal winds right through the Brecon Beacons National Park, so you get rolling hills and quiet countryside views along the way. From our garage you can set off walking in either direction. Along the water you’ll see moored narrowboats, old stone bridges, and plenty of wildlife. Because the path is level, it’s great for an easy morning or afternoon walk, and you can always turn around whenever you’ve had enough.

The canal is particularly lovely in spring and summer: wildflowers line the banks and you might spot ducks, herons or even owls in the trees. There are also many highlights along the way including cafés, pubs and heritage sites including Goytre Wharf, which has a great cafe run by Penny and her team, an easy trip in your new Towacar too!

Llandegfedd Reservoir

Look out over Llandegfedd Reservoir from the wooded hillside. Llandegfedd Reservoir is a huge, 174-hectare lake just a short drive from our garage. Llandegfedd has a large car park where you can park your Towacar, but is near to inaccessible in a motorhome!

Once you’re parked up you can start your walk on the circular trail that loops right around the water’s edge. There are lovely viewpoints across the reservoir, and plenty of wildflowers and birds (the far side is a conservation area for wildfowl). You will also see lots of action on the water, since it’s a popular spot for windsurfing and sailing.

This walk is very tranquil. The path is firm and well-maintained, suitable for sturdy boots or good trainers. At one side of the reservoir there’s a picnic area too, perfect for lunch before continuing your walk. Llandegfedd also has a fantastic visitor centre where you can enjoy a coffee, a full breakfast, an afternoon tea or just soak in the majestic sights of the lake and the watercraft.

Woodland Paths near Pont Kemys Campsite

Not far from Pontypool is the friendly Pont Kemys Caravan & Camping Park (about a 15-minute drive from our garage). This lovely campsite is nestled at the foot of grassy hills next to the River Usk. Towacar customers get a free night here - the perfect base for another day’s adventure! From Pont Kemys you have a few delightful walking options. You might wander along the riverbank (the River Usk Trail passes nearby), where leafy woodlands and sheep-pastured fields stretch away from the campsite. Or for a bit more climb, you can explore the rolling hill behind the site. Heading uphill leads to wide-open upland views across Monmouthshire and even glimpses of the distant Black Mountains on a clear day.

The paths through the woods are shaded and carpeted with bluebells in May. Since the campsite is so handy, you could start here in the morning, walk out for a few miles exploring local trails, and pop back to relax in the evening. (Many Towacar friends park their motorhomes at Port Kemys to enjoy exactly that kind of easy, local exploring.) The campsite itself has showers and a small shop, so you really can treat it as a home base while your Towacar transports you out to fresh new paths each day. There is also a lovely pub just 300 yards away, called The Chainbridge, situated right on the river Usk!

Pen y Fan and the Brecon Beacons

If you’re after a mountain hike, your Towacar helps unlock Brecon Beacons adventures too. The mighty Pen y Fan is just about an hour’s drive from Pontypool. Pen y Fan (886 meters high) is the highest peak in all South Wales, so it’s a proper landmark hike, and is very popular. It’s a steady climb (wear good boots) but very rewarding. At the top you’ll be standing above sheep-covered ridges, with 360° views of the South Wales hills. On a clear day you can see right across the Brecon Beacons and even out toward the coastline.

To keep things interesting, you could take a longer loop via Cribyn or Corn Du (neighbouring peaks). Either way, the trails are wide and safe. A Towacar makes Pen y Fan doable: without it, parking a big motorhome up here isn’t easy, but with a car you can reach the trailhead with ease, enjoy the hike, and be back down well before dusk. If your legs crave even more, remember you can also swing by Sugar Loaf Mountain (near Abergavenny) or take gentle hill walks in the Brecon foothills - everything is within a short drive.
